Once upon a time, makeup routines were all about contoured dewy skin, radiant sunkist cheeks and vibrant lippies! However, health and safety first means that makeup routines now have to co-exist with face masks, and your skin may be starting to disagree (cue breakouts and clogged pores).
Don’t fret – we are here with some helpful tips on how you can adapt your glow-up to keep the virus at bay while taking care of your complexion, and still looking your best when you #MaskUp!
- Exfoliate Your Skin
The abbrasion of the mask on your skin when talking can also cause irritation as the makeup/impurities gets rubbed in. Apart from our daily cleansing routine, gentle exfoliation sloughs off the layers of dead skin that accumulate and clog the pores, to leave your skin looking softer and more radiant.
Do a gentle scrub twice a week, with extra attention around the mouth and chin areas, to remove any impurities that may be lurking in your skin from long hours of wearing your mask. Follow with a clay mask for 15-20 mins for extra purification!
2. Choose a lightweight foundation
Most of us prefer to still wear foundation on the lower half of our face to have an even blend of coverage from forehead to chin so that we can still look our best (especially when we remove our masks for meal time). However, especially if you live in humid climates, heavy makeup formulas can cause breakouts or clogged pores due to it’s interaction with the warm vapor from our breath and the skin’s inability to regulate sebum production.
Opt for a lightweight foundation or a tinted moisturizer for your base makeup. This will allow the skin to breathe behind the mask, and will reduce the

3. Play Up The Eyes
Having to wear a mask may just be a blessing in disg(eyes)! Now’s the time to pull focus to your peepers and let your personality shine through. You could skip the base makeup and supplement with extra servings of fresh and bright eye looks. We’re talking lashings of mascara, an undestructible waterproof eyeliner and a new shade of eye shadow every day – the possibilities are endless!
Above all, remember to wash your hands regularly, and avoid touching your face unnecessarily. Also, do not re-use your disposable masks the next day, and if you wear reusable masks, be sure to wash them after every use!
